Melvin Mutiso Ndinda

Melvin was born on May 10, 2009. He is seven years old and attends VICODEC School in class one. His favorite subjects are social studies and mathematics. During his pastime he likes playing football. While at home he helps his mother with fetching water and washing the utensils. His sibling is Kelvin Matheka and he is in high school.

Melvin's parent separated and both children were left in the custody of their mother, Mary Ndinda born in 1985 who works as casual laborer. The two boys depend on their mother for their daily bread and education.

The family of three live in Kware slums on the outskirts of the city of Nairobi. They live in a single room built of tin. It does not have water, the only source of water is buying it. Melvin and his brother sleep on the floor and use charcoal for cooking.

Kware slum is characterized by poor housing and sanitation, insecurity, unemployment, prostitution, illicit brewing and other social problems.
